Paying for treatment

How coverage works for outpatient care.

Most people who call us are surprised by how much of their care is covered. Under the federal Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, a plan that covers mental health and substance use treatment cannot put harsher copays, deductibles, or visit limits on that care than it puts on medical and surgical care. Parity does not force a plan to include those benefits. It means that when your plan has them, it cannot quietly make them harder to use.

What varies is the level of care. SAMHSA notes that most plans cover treatment, but not all do, and some cover only certain levels of care. A plan might approve intensive outpatient readily and ask more questions about partial hospitalization, or cover outpatient therapy and virtual IOP on different terms. That is the practical reason a benefits check matters. It tells you what your plan does for the specific program you are considering, not for treatment in general. If you want to understand the variables before you call, our guide to what IOP and PHP cost walks through the ones that set your number.

If you are on Health First Colorado, the state Medicaid program, behavioral health services run through a regional organization with no co-pays for those services, and the state's covered continuum includes intensive outpatient care. We can accept some Colorado Medicaid policies. Which ones depends on your specific plan, so call us or send the form and we will tell you where you stand.

Admissions

What our benefits check does.

One form or one call, and we take it from there. Here is what happens, and what it does not commit you to.

We make the calls

Our Admissions Coordinators confirm your behavioral health benefits directly with your insurer, so you are not the one sitting on hold.

It costs nothing

All assessments are free. There is no charge for a benefits check and no charge to ask what your plan covers.

It does not obligate you

A benefits check is not an application or an admission. Many people verify, take the information, and decide in their own time.

What to have ready

Your member ID, the group ID if your plan carries one, and the primary subscriber's name and date of birth if the policy is not in your own name.

Coverage is program specific

Benefits can differ between partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient care, so we check against the program that actually fits you.

A plan we do not list is not a no

We can check out-of-network benefits as well. We will check either way and tell you plainly what we find.

Cost and coverage

Questions we hear most.

Does Colorado Medicaid cover treatment?

We can accept some Colorado Medicaid policies, and which ones depends on your specific plan. Health First Colorado covers behavioral health services through a regional organization, with no co-pays for behavioral health services, and the state's covered continuum runs from outpatient care through intensive outpatient and medication assisted treatment. Call us or submit the verification form and we will find out what your particular policy allows.

Is the insurance check really free?

Yes. All assessments are free. There is no fee to verify your benefits, no fee to talk through what we find, and no charge if you decide not to start.

What information do I need to verify my benefits?

Your insurance card covers most of it. You will need the carrier name, the member ID, and the group ID if your plan has one, plus the phone number printed on the back of the card. If the policy belongs to a spouse or a parent, we also need that subscriber's name and date of birth.

What happens after I submit the form?

An Admissions Coordinator will contact you shortly. They confirm what your plan covers for the program you are considering, explain what that means in plain terms, and answer your questions. Nothing is scheduled and nothing is charged until you decide to move forward.

What if you do not work with my insurance plan?

Send the form anyway. A plan that is not on our list is not automatically a dead end, and we can check out-of-network benefits too. If your coverage genuinely will not work here, we will say so directly rather than let you find out later.
