Kat Huisinga is a licensed clinical social worker and therapist at Redpoint Center, where she brings over six years of experience in the field of addiction and recovery. Grounded in a strengths-based and person in environment perspective, Kat supports clients in identifying and pursuing their goals related to transforming their relationship with substances. Her therapeutic approach draws from a variety of evidence-based modalities, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Somatic Experiencing.
Kat's path to becoming a therapist was shaped by her early work in community service and corrections. While volunteering with AmeriCorps in neighborhood centers in 2009 and later working in the prison system in 2010 , she was deeply moved by the challenges people face and the resilience they demonstrate. These experiences inspired her to pursue a career focused on helping individuals realize their full potential while acknowledging and honoring the systemic and environmental factors that impact personal growth.
Before joining Redpoint, Kat worked for three years at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the Addiction and Recovery Center. During her time there, she was honored with the JLT Award, recognizing her ability to navigate complex clinical situations with skill and compassion. She has also found enjoyment in providing clinical supervision to therapists in training, contributing to the growth and integrity of the field.
Kat earned her Bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Journalism in 2009 and completed her Master of Social Work at The University of Iowa in 2013. She received her clinical licensure in 2019.
Professionally, Kat is interested in expanding her knowledge of Internal Family Systems and somatic forms of therapy, as well as any and all emerging evidence based research within the field of substance use. She is passionate about providing and expanding general knowledge related to substances and substance use as a way to demystify, empower and reduce harm. Outside of her clinical work, she enjoys attending live music, hiking, examining rocks for extended periods of time on said hikes, running, biking, spending time with her family and friends, traveling as often as possible, and savoring delicious food.
